Roughly a month ago, I packed a suitcase with 30 items of clothing and planned to have a capsule wardrobe for a month.

I thought that it was going easy and successful, not to mention that there was a part of me that wanted to be completely transformed by it and decide to live a more minimalist life.

Guess what… that didn’t happen.

My capsule wardrobe lasted for about 2 weeks, and I even screwed up on multiple occasions before that two weeks was even over.

I’m not going to lie, I thought that this post was going to be completely different than it has turned out to be.

I originally thought that I would share what I packed in my capsule wardrobe, along with showing some of my favorite outfits, and giving updates about how it made me a better human.

Spoiler alert– that is not this post.

The reason why I’m still creating this post is because this capsule wardrobe led to several realizations along with changing the current status of my closet and my whole room in general.

Let’s just begin…

~what is a capsule wardrobe and why I failed~

A capsule wardrobe is a smaller version of a wardobe with your favorite pieces that are easy to mix and match and use in many different outfits.
I chose 30 pieces and planned on having a capsule wardrobe for 31 days, with lots of dresses and sversatile pieces, such as this fall brunch dress.

Easy right?
Apparently not for me.

The biggest mistake I made at the beginning was not choosing enough comfy clothes.

Everything I packed was cute, but highly uncomfortable for uneventful days at home in quarantine.

My second mistake was not packing enough workout clothes.
I packed 2 pairs of shorts and 2 shirts, making it so I would need to do laundry every two days.

If I’m having a good week, I do laundry once a week.

Basically, having this wardrobe changed my weekly routines in minor ways that I apparently felt were too difficult to maintain.

So I gave up. 🙂

~current state of closet and room~

It’s not good. It’s really bad.

I trip over at least three things just trying to get to my desk, and it’s been like this for weeks now.

After giving up after the second week my closet and room became so messy and unorganized.

I thought that this challenge would lead to me being more organized, not the complete opposite.

So, I decluttered my closet.

Decluttering my closet only made it worse.

~realization 1: not satisfied with wardrobe~

My first realization after my attempt at a capsule wardrobe and then my room falling to pieces was that I am not happy with my current wardrobe.

Many pieces in my wardobe are from years ago when I was still trying to figure out my style, not to mention when I was also two sizes smaller.

Most of the pieces that I actually really like I have sadley grown out of.

I used to be a competitive swimmer, training 2-4 hours 6 days a week and I really just haven’t been working out as much over quarantine, but have still been eating the same.

Other pieces are basic pieces from middle school that I really just don’t like very much.

That being said, my closet is full of things that are either too small or are uninspiring.

That’s why I plan on doing a second declutter, and getting rid of things that are too small or don’t inspire me anymore.

This is very similar to what I did the first time but this time I plan on discarding everything that doesn’t fit me or I don’t wear even if I really like the article of clothing.

I will also create a list of things I need to replace.

Hopefully it will work this time…

~realization 2: want more high quality pieces~

Having more high quality pieces in your wardrobe is not a new idea to anyone, including myself.

I thought I did a good job with this but now looking at my wardrobe, I did not do a good job.

For me, sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the moment when shopping, leading to an impulse purchase which I may orginally love, but overtime I may lose interest and the material of the clothing starts to wear until I eventually give or throw it away.

I want to be more conscious with my future purchases and have fewer items in my closet that I really love and are high quality rather than a bunch that I like at the moment but then get sick of.
